About PET

The B1 Preliminary exam shows you can communicate in English for work, study and travel.

About the B1 Preliminary (PET) Exam

The B1 Preliminary, formerly known as Cambridge English: Preliminary (PET), is an intermediate-level qualification. It proves that you have mastered the basics of English and have practical language skills for everyday use.

Exam Format

The exam consists of four papers testing all language skills:

Reading
45 minutes

Six parts testing your ability to read real-world texts like signs associated with main ideas, detailed comprehension, and text structure.

Writing
45 minutes

Two parts requiring you to write an email and either an article or a story.

Listening
30 minutes

Four parts testing your ability to understand a range of spoken materials including announcements and interviews.

Speaking
12 minutes

Four parts where you will show your spoken English skills by conversing with the examiner and another candidate.
