About the C2 Proficiency (CPE) Exam

The C2 Proficiency, formerly Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE), is our highest-level qualification. It shows that you have mastered English to an exceptional level.

The CPE Exam Format

This exam is for those who want to prove they can communicate with the fluency and sophistication of a highly competent English speaker:

Reading & Use of English
1 hour 30 minutes

Seven parts. It tests your ability to understand texts from publications such as fiction and non-fiction books, journals, newspapers and magazines.

Writing
1 hour 30 minutes

Two parts. You will write two pieces of writing, such as essays, reports, and reviews.

Listening
40 minutes

Four parts. It tests your ability to understand the meaning of a range of spoken material, including lectures, radio programmes, speeches and talks.

Speaking
16 minutes

Three parts. It tests your ability to communicate in a variety of contexts, effectively and convincingly.
