About FCE

The B2 First exam shows you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country.

About the B2 First (FCE) Exam

The B2 First, commonly called FCE, is our most popular exam. It proves you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country or study on courses taught in English.

Structure of the FCE Exam

The B2 First exam is made up of four papers developed to test your English skills:

Reading & Use of English
1 hour 15 minutes

Seven parts testing your control of grammar and vocabulary, and your ability to handle different types of text.

Writing
1 hour 20 minutes

You are required to produce two pieces of writing, such as essays, letters, emails, reports, and reviews.

Listening
40 minutes

Four parts testing your ability to follow and understand a range of spoken materials, such as news programmes, presentations, and everyday conversations.

Speaking
14 minutes

Four parts testing your ability to communicate effectively in face-to-face situations.
