About the C1 Advanced (CAE) Exam

The C1 Advanced, formerly known as Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), is the in-depth, high-level qualification that shows you have the language skills that employers and universities are looking for.

What to expect in the CAE exam?

The exam is designed to be a rigorous test of your English skills:

Reading & Use of English
1 hour 30 minutes

Eight parts. It tests your ability to deal with different types of text and your control of grammar and vocabulary.

Writing
1 hour 30 minutes

You will write an essay and choose another task from options including a letter/email, proposal, report, or review.

Listening
40 minutes

Four parts testing your ability to understand spoken English in different contexts.

Speaking
15 minutes

Four parts including a collaborative task and a long turn, testing your ability to communicate effectively in complex situations.
