What is the B2 First (FCE) Essay?
The essay is a compulsory task in Part 1 of the B2 First Writing paper. You are given a title and two points to discuss. You must also add a third point of your own related to the topic.
Key Requirements
- Word count: 140 - 190 words.
- Tone: Formal or semi-formal. Avoid slang and overly casual expressions.
- Structure: A clear introduction, main body paragraphs (one for each point), and a conclusion.
Recommended Structure
1. Introduction: Introduce the topic and state your general opinion. Do not just copy the prompt.

Nowadays, it is highly debated whether the internet has improved our daily lives or made them more complicated. While there are some drawbacks, I firmly believe that the internet has brought significant benefits to society.
Firstly, the internet has revolutionised communication. In the past, keeping in touch with friends and family abroad was expensive and slow. Furthermore, with the introduction of social media and video calls, people can communicate instantly, regardless of the distance.
Secondly, finding reliable information has never been easier. Thanks to search engines, students and professionals have access to an endless amount of knowledge in seconds, which helps them save valuable time.
Another aspect to consider is the convenience of online shopping. Today, we can purchase almost anything without leaving the house, which is highly beneficial for the elderly or those with busy schedules.
To sum up, despite some concerns about privacy, the internet has undeniably made communication faster, information more accessible, and everyday tasks far more convenient. Therefore, I believe it is an essential tool in modern life.
